Opening a Practice Stock Trading Account
Nov 21st, 2009
We often talk about how important it is to practice your stock trading in order to become a more disciplined trader. The first step to being able to test out your stock trading strategies is to set up a practice stock trading account. In my opinion even if you already have a real money trading account, you should set up an account strictly for testing out new trading techniques. If you have found a software package that you really like you can always use the same broker for your real money account and your practice account…. just remember which one is which!
If you are brand new to trading on the stock market, opening a demo stock account is the perfect way to get your feet wet. There are plenty of brokers out there and nearly all of them offer a paper trading account. I would check out a few of the available options for your new account, and maybe open a practice stock trading account with a couple of your favorites. As you become more familiar with the mechanics of trading stocks you will be able to decide which software is the best fit for you. Some people love to have a downloaded program that runs from your desktop, and some only do their stock trading through a web browser. If you are only going to be making trades from your mobile phone, you will want to check out the compatibility of the different brokers for that purpose. You have no obligation when you are opening a practice trading account, just think of it like a test drive. These companies want your business, so it should be up to them to give you the best product. When I first started trading stocks I just deposited my money in the first account that looked good to me. I was lucky and ended up with a decent broker, but if I had it to do all over again I would test the waters before jumping in with both feet.
The actual sign up process for opening a virtual money trading account is very simple. You basically just fill out name, address and phone number type information and you are set to start using the account. When you are depositing money into an account and looking to get authorized for margin trading or certain option plays the process gets a little bit more complicated, but that’s for another time. Try out some of the different companies, and feel free to leave your opinions in the comments.
